I'm Dr. Yoko Tamura, the Tarzana bird-avian doctor /vet and the owner of Capri Plaza Pet Clinic. I have a special interest in avian (bird) medicine and surgery. My interest in exotic birds was formed during my high school years when I volunteered at an avian-only veterinary practice, and fell in love with these feathered companions. For many years, I have been the bird vet or bird doctor to hundreds of avian - bird owners just like you in Los Angles County. I am a licensed California veterinarian who also specializes in the treatment of avian - birds.

Has it been more than 12 months since your bird's last annual examination? Allow us to protect your Arican Grey Parrot, Cockatiel, Cockatoo, Congo African Grey, Conures, Lovebirds, Macaws, Parakeets, Parrots, Pigeons by scheduling an annual checkup.

Change in Appetite or Losing Weight?
Birds do have an extremely high metabolic rate, which is why they must consume a high quantity of high quality nutrition each day. If your bird is not eating and/or is losing weight, it may be an indication of stomach or intestinal infection (bacterial, fungal, viral, or parasitic), liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatic disease, toxins, gastrointestinal foreign bodies/obstruction, injury, physical changes, tumors/cancers, injury, or behavioral/psychological issues.

Unusual Droppings?

Have the color of your bird's droppings changed? Look for droppings that are yellow, dark green, or tarry black. Are whole seeds being passed? Is it excessively watery? Abnormal droppings can be indicators of internal bleeding, gastrointestinal infections, kidney disease, liver disease, pancreatitis, dietary intolerance, nutritional imbalance, toxicosis, reproductive problems, or impactions

Ruffled Feathers?
Does your bird sit and show feathers fluffed out for extended periods? This is a non-specific sign of a sick bird and may be due to many possible causes including, respiratory disease, egg binding or other reproductive problems, tumors, organ failure, and any condition that causes generlized weakness.  Tattered feathers are more likely due to feather picking behavior, which can be due to anxiety, aberrant or excessive hormonal activity, nutritional problems, metabolic illness, or skin disease.

Red, Inflamed, or Runny Beak (Cere)?
Your bird's beak nostrils (cere) should be checked for redness, inflammation or discharge. If any of these symptoms are present, it can mean an upper respiratory infection.  Crusty cere can be due to hormonal changes or mites as well.

Cloudy – Runny Eyes?
Do your bird's eyes appear cloudy or do they have a discharge? This could be an indicator of a respiratory or other disorder, eye injury, cataracts, or corneal deposits.
